The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Clean Cities Program is a voluntary, vocally based government/industry partnership to mobilize local stakeholders in the effort to expand the use of alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuel, accelerate the deployment of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), and build a local AFV refueling infrastructure.

Clean Cities coordinates the activities of both private and public sector components of AFVs by providing a forum to discover their commonalities, resources, and cooperate in promoting the benefits of AFVs in their communities. Clean Cities is a local plan that reflects a community’s choice for alternative fuels and the ongoing commitment to that choice.

The government of Western Riverside County will take leadership roles in this Clean Cities coalition, coordinating efforts, between government and industry to recognize the value of partnership in achieving air quality, energy security, economic development, and transportation goals, while advancing the clean air and energy security goals of the national Clean Cities program.

Clean Cities works with local businesses and governments to shepherd them through the goal-setting, coalition-building, and commitments process necessary to establish the foundations for a viable alternative fuels market.  In more than 75 communities around the country, Clean Cities has created partnerships of people interested in using alternative fuels.  The objective of Clean Cities has been to create local market-places where people can learn what's required to create an alternative fuels community; how to purchase a vehicle and how to fuel it; all the transactions that need to take place for a market to develop.  With Clean Cities, the uncertainty of using alternative fuels is being eliminated.

By sharing local innovation among the Clean Cities network, by relaying local problems to state and federal objectives, and by providing continuous feedback to the 3700+ industry and government stakeholders, Clean Cities can continually pioneer innovations and aspire to impact national as well as local achievements.

  • Improve air quality through increased use of alternative fuels and public transit.
  • Identify funding opportunities for AFV purchases.
  • Promote AFV infrastructure & educational programs.
